Why This Matters for Sound Design

There are three ways to make a digital instrument sound realistic today:

1. Sampling - Record the real thing, store millions of files.

  • Pros: Utterly authentic (it is authentic)
  • Cons: Massive file sizes, static behavior, laggy round-robin switching, can’t interpolate between velocities

2. Wavetables/Subtractive - Oscillators + filters + envelopes.

  • Pros: Lightweight, instantly creative, infinite variation
  • Cons: Doesn’t feel like playing an instrument, struggles with natural dynamics

3. Physical Modeling - Mathematical simulation of acoustics.

  • Pros: Tiny file sizes, infinite expressivity, responds like a real instrument, can defy physics if you want
  • Cons: CPU-intensive, slower adoption, smaller plugin ecosystem

But here’s what excites me: physical modeling is the only approach that gets better with more playing, because the engine learns your playing style and responds accordingly. A Pianoteq piano sounds different when a master pianist plays it versus a beginner. A SWAM violin sounds different depending on your bow angle, pressure, and speed. This is real expressivity.

  • Modulate the string length dynamically

Who’s Leading This Space (2026)

Applied Acoustics Systems - The pioneers. Chromaphone is underrated as a creative tool (not just realistic piano emulation). UltraAnalog VA-3 is a pure joy to play.

Modartt (Pianoteq) - The gold standard for digital pianos. But it’s also a modular sound-design tool if you look at it sideways. Tweak the hammer, the strings, the dampers - suddenly you have an alien instrument.

Audio Modeling (SWAM) - The most expressive orchestral tools on the market. If you care about violin as an instrument and not just a sound effect, SWAM is mandatory. Their modeling of bowing techniques is unmatched.

Physical Audio - The experimentalists. Modus and Derailer aren’t trying to emulate reality; they’re using physical modeling to create impossible instruments. This is where the future gets weird.

Expressive E (Imagine) - A playful entry point. Less realistic, more “acoustic character meets modern sound design.” Great for people who want the responsiveness without the acoustic simulation.

Arturia (Piano V, Harp V, etc.) - Consumer-friendly physical modeling with their typical quality. Excellent starting point.

The Barrier to Adoption

Physical modeling hasn’t taken over because:

  1. CPU cost - It’s heavier than sampling on the DSP side (you’re running math, not sample playback). This is improving but still matters on large sessions.

  2. Workflow inertia - We’re trained on samplers. “Load a library, adjust velocity curves, done.” Physical modeling requires understanding what you’re modeling.

  3. Lack of “perfect” recreations - A Spitfire violin sounds closer to a specific Strad than any physical model. If your goal is “authentic takeover,” samplers still win. (Though I’d argue they’re dying on that criterion as libraries age - a 2020 sampled library of a 1992 recorded session isn’t authentic to modern playing styles.)

  4. Small ecosystem - Wavetable synthesis has thousands of preset designers. Physical modeling has dozens. This creates a perception gap.

Why the Future Belongs to Physical Modeling

Three reasons:

1. Expressivity scales with input. As controllers get more sophisticated (hand tracking, pressure sensing, generative input from AI), physical modeling systems become more powerful, not obsolete. A sampled Spitfire library with AI-generated new takes is still just samples. A physical modeling engine with AI-suggested parameter combinations is a new instrument.

2. File sizes matter more as cloud, browser-based, and mobile production grow. Want to ship a full orchestral toolkit as a web plugin? Physical modeling is the only way. Wavetables get there, but they sacrifice acoustic authenticity.

3. Players want instruments, not libraries. The indie lo-fi bedroom producer wants infinite presets. The trained pianist wants the instrument itself, just digital. Physical modeling is the only approach that feels like playing an instrument, not triggering a DJ sample.

A Personal Note

I was skeptical of physical modeling for years. It felt gimmicky - “fake realism” compared to sampling. But when I spent a day with Tension, playing it like an actual string instrument, I realized something: physical modeling isn’t trying to win on authenticity. It’s winning on possibility.

You can’t detune a sampled string. You can’t move the pickup position on a sampled guitar in real-time. You can’t modulate the resonance cavity of a sampled piano.

Physical modeling doesn’t compete with reality. It becomes reality the moment you decide what reality you want to simulate.
